You awaken in the middle of the night to your house shrouded in smoke, and you can feel the heat of fire.

You can barely see through the smoke, but you know what to do because you’ve practiced your plan — open the bedroom window, kick out the screen, lower your chain fire ladder and climb out of the house.

Planning in advance is the best way for any person or family to stay safe if their home catches fire, local firefighters said.
