A Greenwood man who police say shot and killed his estranged wife’s friend was on probation for a federal charge and should not have been carrying a gun.
Police confirmed the identities of both men who died Wednesday after a shooting at a Greenwood apartment and a police chase that ended in southwest Marion County. They continue to investigate what happened before the shooting and whether the same gun was used in both shootings.
Police identified the shooter as Kevin Sharrett, 44, of Greenwood. An autopsy Thursday confirmed that Sharrett died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, Greenwood Police Department Assistant Chief Matthew Fillenwarth said.
Sharrett had a federal conviction for conspiracy to distribute Oxycontin and was serving a three-year probation sentence for the charge. He should not have been carrying a gun, a chief U.S. probation officer said.
Police believe Sharrett shot Steven Lively, 47, of Indianapolis, Fillenwarth said. Police found Lively in a home in Devonshire Apartments off State Road 135 about 1 p.m. Wednesday. An autopsy for Lively was scheduled for Thursday to determine his time of death.
Lively was at the Greenwood apartment with Kevin Sharrett’s estranged wife, Michelle Sharrett; and the shooting happened after an argument between Kevin and Michelle Sharrett at her apartment, police said.
