Police: Return change picked up on highway

Daily Journal staff reports

Hundreds of dollars in loose change was spilled on a busy highway, and police are asking that anyone who stopped and collected the money to bring it back.

Police were called to State Road 135 and County Road 500W near Trafalgar at about 8:30 a.m. Friday for a traffic hazard. A Johnson County sheriff’s deputy found change scattered all over the road and at least two vehicles that had stopped to pick up the money, according to the police report.

One man who stopped gave the deputy the change he collected, but said others had left with the money they picked up.

The county highway department was called to help clean up the intersection, and more than $439 in change was picked up, the report said.

Police also found other items in the intersection and believe they were from a nearby home that was burglarized, the report said.

Anyone who stopped and picked up money is asked to bring it to the sheriff’s office because they believe the change was stolen from a home, Sheriff Doug Cox said.
