The beautiful thing about a story is that it never stops growing, at least to Alabama resident Dolores Hydock.
New characters and situations can sprout out of the main stem of the plot. Tendrils of side-story wind out as the piece evolves into something completely new.
A perfect illustration is Hydock’s performance “Putting Down New Roots.” What started as a piece on gardening instead became a vivid look at her own family’s history. From her grandfather’s arrival at Ellis Island in 1912 to her own upbringing in Reading, Pa., Hydock has found amazing stories in the rich ground of her own background.
