Whiteland senior Paige Lundy, above, has alternated with junior Alexa West, below, as the Warriors%u2019 No. 1 golfer this season.
During its 15 years as a varsity program, the Whiteland Community High School’s girls golf team hasn’t established much of a winning tradition.
Not until recently, that is.
The Warriors’ initial taste of success came in 2010, when they won their first Johnson County Girls Golf Tournament. Whiteland then brought home its second county title this season.
Although the Warriors have yet to advance past the opening round of the IHSAA state tournament, first-year coach Kristen Welker said Whiteland hopes to take its next major step as a team by winning its first sectional crown.
“I think that this year, more than ever, we have a really great chance of going into sectional knowing we can be competitive to win, not just get out,” Welker said. “We don’t have the mentality of going there to just get in the top three.
“We’re going to try to go there and win.”
