The screaming, violence and unpredictable behavior had become too much.

Joy McClain finally had to leave her alcoholic husband. She had lived with Mark McClain’s drinking for more than 20 years, hoping it would become better and that God would take his addiction away.

But she couldn’t leave their three children in such a toxic environment. She filed for a legal separation that would last for three years.

Still, Joy McClain refused to give up completely on their marriage.

“I had taken a vow, and I was going to see it through. That meant I was going to wait for him. It didn’t matter to me the amount of time. It was wearying, but that just proves that God gives us strength for each day,” she said.
