For more than 12 years, a phone has sat on a desk in his computer room, ringing with calls from friends, family and solicitors, too.

Though his landline phone can never leave his home, to Gerald Eder it represents a sort of freedom — from having to constantly be in touch with other people.

Despite pleading from his family members, Eder has refused for years to get a cellphone, instead sticking with the same old landline phone in his Greenwood home. He has caller ID and voice mail, all the features he could ask for in a cellphone without the hassle of having to carry it around.
