On a day high winds late in the afternoon made playing conditions difficult, the Greenwood girls golf team rose to the challenge.

The Woodmen’s reward is a trip to the IHSAA state finals.

In somewhat of a surprise finish, the Woodmen placed third behind fifth-ranked Carmel (334) and No. 12 Zionsville (356) to earn the third and final team spot for the the two-day state golf tournament, which begins Friday at The Legends Golf Club in Franklin.

For Greenwood, which also carded a 356 but finished third by virtue of a fifth-player’s score, the advancement was mildly unexpected in light of the fact it had not finished ahead of county and sectional champion Whiteland or county rival Center Grove at any previous tournament this season.

Outside expectations aside, the Woodmen simply went out and performed their best when it mattered most.

“We knew there were some really good teams coming in, teams that have beaten us throughout the year,” Greenwood coach Tim Guilfoy said. “It was a waiting game there for awhile. We were just sweating it out and holding our breath.
