A downtown Franklin intersection will be closed for a month starting today.

The intersection of Jackson and Madison streets will be closed so workers can install new storm sewers and resurface the road on the south side of Madison Street from Breckenridge Street to Main Street, street commissioner Ron Collins said.

The north side of the street was upgraded earlier this year with new storm drains and sidewalks as part of the city’s $3.3 million North Main Street project to improve the drainage and roads. But upgrades to the south side of the street were not included in the plans.

Now the city is improving the sewer system and road surfacing on the south side of the street to match the north side, Collins said.

The Franklin Redevelopment Commission will pay the $225,000 needed for the improvements, Collins said.

He said the city hopes to reopen Madison and the section of Main from Jefferson Street to Madison by the end of November.
