A new medical provider at the Johnson County jail plans to offer more care inside the jail so that inmates have to be taken elsewhere for treatment less frequently.
Advanced Correctional Healthcare took over medical care at the jail Dec. 15. Staff members treat injuries, short- and long-term illnesses and mental health issues inmates face. The company will bring in a mental health worker, dentist and X-ray machine when necessary so that inmates no longer have to be taken outside the jail for those appointments.
The company took over as the care provider at the jail after Johnson Memorial Hospital decided not to renew its contract with the county as the provider because the hospital did not want to provide jail care anymore.
