Cliff Hawkins knows that for his Center Grove boys basketball team to live up to its potential, a certain level of stinginess at the defensive end is a must.

The 10th-year Trojans coach liked what he witnessed Friday night in Center Grove’s 65-49 defeat of visiting Whiteland, a win that improved the Trojans to 5-2 entering what amounts to a seven-day holiday hiatus.

“Each game presents a different set of challenges and we are getting better defensively week to week,” said Hawkins, whose squad forced only 11 Warriors turnovers but limited them to 17-of-45 shooting (.378) from the floor.
