TERRE HAUTE
A double dose of Alex Aukerman is just what the Center Grove football team needed Saturday at Terre Haute North.
The junior defensive back returned a 58-yard punt for a touchdown in the first half, then made a game-saving tackle at the end of the second to help Class 5A No. 6 Center Grove escape with a 17-15 win in a game that was postponed Friday because of thunderstorms.
Center Grove was short-handed, coach Eric Moore said, because seven starters sat out due to a combination of injuries and ACT tests.
“Our kids stood up in the face of adversity today,” Moore said. “I’m just happy for our team to win a game that was really against all odds.”
The Trojans, who have never lost a regular-season game against Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference rival Terre Haute North, led 17-9 late in the fourth quarter but got a scare in the closing minutes.
