He had missed almost a year of his 3-year-old son’s life and most of the first year of his marriage, but Johnnie Deaton had a surprise gift for his family this Christmas: himself.

Deaton, a guardsman with the Indiana National Guard, arrived home from a 10-month deployment to Afghanistan on Wednesday. His mother, Robin Jansen, and wife, Sheryl Deaton, were there to greet him before wrapping him in a giant present for their son, Hunter Deaton, to open as a surprise.

The 3-year-old would either be excited at first or scared to see a live person jump out of the gift, Sheryl Deaton said.
