Playgrounds at schools in Greenwood and Whiteland soon will include not just slides and swings, but wheelchair-accessible equipment for students with special needs.
After Westwood Elementary School and Pleasant Crossing Elementary School started offering preschool classes for special needs students and full-day kindergarten, both needed safer, more accessible playgrounds for kids to use at recess. The two playgrounds will feature slides and swings that children in wheelchairs can use and that are safer for small kids.
Playgrounds at other schools, such as Southwest Elementary, have some equipment for special needs students, but none are designed specifically for them. Schools in Center Grove and Franklin rely on parent-teacher organizations to donate playground equipment or buy it when needed.
