You can thank this summer’s drought when a main Franklin street reopens much earlier than expected.

Franklin residents who want to visit businesses on Main Street will be able to use a section of the street by Christmas. Officials want motorists who are not visiting the businesses to stay off the street when it first opens.

The entire street should be reopened to all drivers by November 2013.

Good weather has put construction on the North Main Street project six weeks ahead of schedule, and officials say it could be finished six months before the original completion date, street commissioner Ron Collins said.

The $3.3 million project includes putting a new storm drainage system under Main and Madison streets and improving the structure of the roads and sidewalks.

Officials originally planned to complete the project by April 2014, but good weather has allowed workers to stay ahead of schedule, Collins said.
