A Center Grove area resident of nearly 30 years believes street upgrades near a new Walmart store won’t reduce the heavy traffic he faces when he drives to the grocery store or dentist.
Jack Ottinger, who lives on San Jose Drive, used to have cattle and goats as neighbors. He has watched the Center Grove area along State Road 135, much of which Greenwood has annexed, develop over the years. Apartments and strip malls have been built near his home. Commuters driving to Greenwood or Indianapolis on Smith Valley Road, which mostly has just two lanes, cause heavy traffic in the mornings and evenings, he said.
With Greenwood’s growth has come heavy traffic at State Road 135 and Smith Valley Road, which is about a mile from Ottinger’s home. A Walmart store planned to be built by next year on a vacant lot at 882 S. State Road 135 will only increase congestion in the area he drives through to get groceries, eat at restaurants, get prescriptions or go to the doctor, he said.
