Submitted Joel Flynn shows off his awards after winning the talent contest at the Johnson County fair.

He spent almost a year perfecting the song.

Minutes before Joel Flynn took the stage at the Indiana State Fair, he just hoped he could finish his performance.

The Center Grove High School junior had a bout with bronchitis before performing at the final talent show at the fair.

He won the Johnson County fair with his rendition of “Where I Want to Be” from the musical “Chess.”

“I was freaking out trying to get through the song, let alone win,” he said.

Flynn has spent 13 years dancing and had won at the state fair with tapping routines. But singing is relatively new to Flynn. He started singing in competitions in high school.
