He spent almost a year perfecting the song.
Minutes before Joel Flynn took the stage at the Indiana State Fair, he just hoped he could finish his performance.
The Center Grove High School junior had a bout with bronchitis before performing at the final talent show at the fair.
He won the Johnson County fair with his rendition of “Where I Want to Be” from the musical “Chess.”
And despite the bronchitis, his performance at the Indiana State Fair earned him first place in the senior male vocal division. He received a plaque and a ribbon.
“I was freaking out trying to get through the song, let alone win,” he said.
Flynn has spent 13 years dancing and had won at the state fair with tapping routines. But singing is relatively new to Flynn. He started singing in competitions in high school.
