For 120 freshmen studying biology at Whiteland Community High School, it’s not enough to know how photosynthesis works; their teachers also expect them find a way replicate the process using technology and market it to businesses.

The students are enrolled in a pilot course that combines biology, computer applications and college and career preparedness, and many of their assignments are group projects combining lessons from the subjects. One of this year’s projects involved studying photosynthesis, the process plants use to convert light energy into chemical energy and carbon dioxide into oxygen.

The students were told to create a machine that would use photosynthesis and then create a marketing plan that could be used to sell that machine.
