Workers cut gas line; Franklin street closed

The smell of natural gas wafted through downtown Franklin on Friday after construction workers broke an underground gas line.

North Main Street was shut down for about an hour after workers from contractor Monroe LLC cut a gas line in the alley next to the Artcraft Theatre around noon. No one was injured, and Vectren workers were able to shut off the gas and repair the leak, Franklin Fire Department spokesman Brad Epperson said.

Workers are rebuilding the alley south of the Artcraft and west of the former G.C. Murphy building into a new lighted, concrete pedestrian walkway.
