The protective wrap surrounding the right knee of Indian Creek point guard Brooke Mathena during practices and games covers a scar approximately one inch in length.
Mathena for the rest of her days will be able to observe the marking with contrasting emotions. It does, after all, represent, in order, the thrill of boundless promise, the pain of reality, the fear of uncertainty, a certain sense of accomplishment and, again, the excitement of promise.
If only the scar had been shaped like a circle.
