The director of the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Center is retiring after 21 years.

Jim Higdon has worked for Johnson County government for nearly 40 years and has run the juvenile detention center since it opened in 1992. He plans to retire in April.

The decision to leave is bittersweet since he’s been with the center since it opened, Higdon said. He added he thinks of all the thank-yous he’s received over the years from children who came to the center or their families and knows he helped change their lives for the better.
