Hilda E. (Ward) Small, 89, of Greenwood and formerly of Beech Grove, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012.
She was born Dec. 4, 1922, in Norfolk, England, to Henry Ward and Rose E (Hall) Ward. She met the love of her life, Donald Small, in England during World War II; and they married there Dec. 20, 1944. They enjoyed more than 58 wonderful years happily wed.
In addition to her mother, father and husband, she also was preceded in death by a son, a daughter and her siblings.
Survivors include three children, Terry (Linda) Small, Trudy Small and Sheila (Mick) Huffman; eight grandchildren, Jenny, Jon, Eric, Dawn (Mike), Todd, Tyler (Jessie), Trent (Sarah) and Emily; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was a frequent volunteer and supporter of the schools and activities in which her husband was an educator, including Yorktown, Whitestown, Vevay, Greenwood, Daleville, Beech Grove and Central Nine Career Center. She was a longtime member of Waldron United Methodist Church, Tri Kappa and other charitable causes.
She was very supportive of her grandchildren and their activities.
Alan Small will conduct a memorial service at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood United Methodist Church, 258 N. Madison Ave. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until service time Tuesday at the church. Private burial will be at Van Pelt Cemetery near Waldron on Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
