Doyle Helgo Jessen, 90, passed away Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, in Indianapolis. He was a resident of Whiteland and a former resident of Michigan.
Doyle was born April 30, 1922, in Mount Pleasant, Mich., to Nels Christian and Lena (Rasmussen) Jessen. He grew up in Lansing, Mich., and graduated from Central High School, class of 1941.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II.
He received a bachelor’s degree in mortuary science from Wayne State University. He was a licensed funeral director for 63 years.
He owned and operated with his wife, Gwen, Jessen Funeral Home, first in Hillsdale and then in Lansing, Mich., retiring in 1976.
Doyle enjoyed yard work, playing cards, boating and family parties at their house at Torch Lake, Mich. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include three children, C. John (Suellen) Jessen of Nineveh, and Lorna J. Fenner and Jill R. (Rick) Oppenlander, both of Michigan; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gwendolyn A. (Gorsline) Jessen; and three brothers, Arnold, Robert and Clarence Jessen.
A funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Jessen Funeral Home, Whiteland Chapel, 729 U.S. 31 North. Military honors will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Summit Cemetery in Williamston, Mich.
