Richard Oren Bacon, 79, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, in Spencer. He was a former resident of Palos Park, Ill., and Jacksonville, Fla.
He was born Oct. 9, 1932, in Fort Wayne to Donald L. and Margaret A. (Phipps) Bacon.
Richard was a career newspaperman, having worked in Fort Wayne, Logansport, Hammond, Gary, Indianapolis, Monticello, Chicago and Dayton, Ohio, and retiring from the Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville.
He was a graduate of Ashley (Ind.) High School and Indiana University.
He was a devoted husband and father, generous and compassionate by nature, and will be dearly missed.
He was also a former Scout leader and church deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Jane Miller Bacon of Palos Park, Ill.; four children, Bobbi (Carl) Wagner of Bloomington, Scott (Carissa) Bacon of Greenwood, Stephanie (Ray) McCluer of Katy, Texas, and Stephen (Shanna) Bacon of Carmel; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald L. and Margaret Bacon; his first wife, Norma Joyce Bullock Bacon; a son, Bradley Oren Bacon; and a brother, Robert Bacon.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Young Family Funeral Home, Wolcottville Chapel, North State Road 9, with the Rev. Frederick Cain officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 10:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Woodruff (Ind.) Cemetery.
