Mr. Donald L. “Don” Payne, 83, of Greenwood, passed away Monday, Feb. 25, 2013.
He was born March 11, 1929, in Robertson County, Tenn., a son of Willard and Mattie (Johnson) Payne.
He married Helen (Touvell) Payne on Sept. 25, 1965. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Michael L. Payne; five daughters, Cindy Hunsucker, Lindy Foreman, Pam Johnson, Donna McClure and Paula Spalding; a brother, Carney Payne; a daughter-in-law, Ann Thompson; 16 grandchildren, Lisa Wooten, Allison and Ginger
Leding, LeAnn Burke, Angie Frey, Kaylin and Kyle McClure, Cody Youngblood, Michael Payne, Shelley Watterman, Mindy Payne, Michelle Poynter, Master Sgt. Heather Thompson of the U.S. Air Force, Allisa Trimmell, Jennifer Sholty and Shawn Garris; 22 great-grandchildren, Maggie, Benjamin and James Burke, Rowan and Mason Waterman, Hayden and Nolen Ussery, Gavin Payne, Becky Cheyanne Youngblood, Hayley, Trevor, Tawhney and Penney Ann Garris, Colin and Jerieka Sholty, Dano Kennedy, Shyanne McKinney, Qualyn Leding, Sophia Trimmell, Lauryn Craft, and Ethan and Sammy Hodgins; one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Penny Fields; two sons, Terry Thompson and William Payne; three sisters; and one brother.
Don served our country in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Christian Fellowship.
Don was a road driver for Roadway Express in Indianapolis for 56 years and was a member of Teamsters Local 135.
He enjoyed IndyCar and NASCAR racing. Don and Helen also enjoyed their grand-pups and grand-kitties.
The service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main St. The Rev. Mickey Roy will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis.
