Michael J. Kias, 77, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at Mason Point in Sullivan, Ill.
He was born in Coulterville, Ill., in 1936. He graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill., with a BA in 1958, and graduated from Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis in June 1962.
He was admitted to practice before the Indiana Supreme Court, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Indiana, 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and U.S. Supreme Court in September, 1962.
Michael was a member of the American Bar Association, the Indiana State Bar Association, Indianapolis Bar Association, and the Johnson County Bar Association. He was a member of Phi Delta Phi, legal fraternity; the Indiana Advocates Society; and a 50 year Master Mason Grand Lodge of A.F. & A.M. of the State of Illinois, Hope Lodge No. 162.
Mike was a member of the law firms of Haggerty, Haggerty and Kias from 1962 to 1983; Forbes, Kias and Pennamped from 1983 to 1987; a senior partner at Stewart and Irwin from 1987 to 2002 and associated with Haggerty, Haggerty and Maschmeyer from 2002 to 2005.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Susan Pettijohn Kias; three children, Molly Kias of Indianapolis, Evan Kias of Golden, Co., and Lauren Kias of Chicago, Ill.; two grandchildren, Julia Hendren and Jack Parker; a sister, Kay Kias Waltman of Miami, Fl., and a niece, Robin Roets Peck, of Naperville, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents, K.C. and Gladius Kias and a sister, Joan Roets.
An anatomical gift is being made to SIU School of Medicine, Center for Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders. The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to SIU Alzheimer Center, 751 N. Rutledge St., Springfield, IL 62702 (www.siumed.edu/neuro).
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at G.H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home at The Gardens at Olive Branch, 1605 S. State Road 135 in Greenwood with memorial visitation from 11 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.
