James Dee Cantwell, 73, lifelong resident of Franklin, passed away Friday, March 8, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born Aug. 12, 1939, in Franklin to Jason D. and Edelle J. (Keith) Cantwell.
He married Joy A. (Guthrie) Cantwell on June 26, 1959, in Franklin. She survives.
Jim retired in 1997 from Major Land Surveying, formally known as Freeze and Abplanalp Engineering, that same year he co-founded CKW Land Surveying in Franklin.
He was a member of Franklin Masonic Lodge No. 107, York Rite of Bloomington, the Murat Shrine of Indianapolis, the Johnson County Shrine Club and First Presbyterian Church in Franklin. He was a past president of the Johnson County Mini Mystics and was most recently a board member of JOPPA Inc.
He enjoyed drawing characters and was a published illustrator.
Jim had decreased his office schedule in the last couple of years and spent his newly found time spread between grandchildren, drawing and community involvements.
Survivors include his wife, Joy A. (Guthrie) Cantwell of Franklin; children, Tammi A. (David) Tyner, Mendy S. Williams, Teddi D. Cantwell-Adams and J. Gregg (Diane) Cantwell, all of Franklin; eight grandchildren, Brittany Tyner, Hannah Tyner, Charles Adams, Trevor Adams, Hunter Adams, Olivia Mars, Jimmy Cantwell, and Sammy Cantwell; great-grandchildren, Itali Guthrey and Camaira Guthrey; brother, Bill Cantwell of Franklin; and two nephews, Scott and Jeff Cantwell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a infant sister, Shirley Sue Cantwell.
The Rev. Peter Jessen will conduct a service at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, 100 E. Madison St., Franklin. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 S. U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, where Franklin Masonic Lodge No. 107 will conduct a service at 7 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
