Thomas Eugene Heacox
Thomas Eugene “Tom” Heacox, 80, passed away peacefully Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was a resident of Greenwood.
Tom was born Aug. 7, 1934, in Brazil, to the late Harold Roy and Hazel Marie (Elkins) Heacox. He was a 1952 graduate of Emmerich Manual High School in Indianapolis, where he played successfully on the basketball team.
He married Betty Gene (Barrett) on Oct. 31, 1985, in Greenwood. She preceded him in death on July 23, 2007, after 21 years of marriage.
Tom was retired from Olinger Distributing Co. and previously worked for Higlemeyers Distribution Center in Indianapolis. He was a member of Greenwood Christian Church and was an International Teamsters retiree.
Tom was an avid golfer and champion of many competitions. He was also a caretaker of Sarah Shank Golf Course in Indianapolis for many years. In his leisure time, he was a big fan of horse racing and enjoyed walking the Greenwood Park Mall with his friends.
Tom is survived by two daughters, Cindy Lue (Michael) Crafton of Greenwood and Donna Sue (Mark) Lebow of Bloomington, Illinois; and three stepchildren, Shirley Ann (Mark) Willoughby of Homestead, Florida, Jimmy Dewayne (Carolyn) Clark and Michael Keith (Robin) Clark, both of Trafalgar. He will be remembered by his siblings, Mary Smallwood of Indianapolis, Larry (Nancy) Heacox of Martinsville and Jack (Beverly) Heacox of Greenwood; grandchildren, Michael (Katie) Crafton II, Kelley (Jeremy) Yagle, Matthew (Carysa) Crafton and Casey Crafton, all of Indianapolis, and Aarron Lebow and Thomas Lebow, both of Bloomington, Illinois; and three great-grandchildren and one on the way.
Tom was preceded in death
by siblings, Harold, James, Wilburn and Don Heacox and Virginia Lustig.
The Rev. Shan Rutherford will conduct a memorial service at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Greenwood Christian Church, 2045 Averitt Road in Greenwood. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Meredith-Clark Funeral Home, Cremation and Personalization Center in Morgantown.
