INDIANAPOLIS — The father of the man police say fatally shot an Indianapolis police officer died in police custody 11 years ago.

Police say 25-year-old Major Davis Jr. is in critical condition following surgery. He's accused of shooting 51-year-old Officer Perry Renn with an assault rifle Saturday night on the city's north side. Davis faces a preliminary charge of murder.

His father, 35-year Major Davis Sr., died in police custody in May 2003 the day before his son's 14th birthday. The elder Davis had been arrested for public intoxication and struggled with officers. An autopsy concluded he died of a heart attack.

Police reports show Major Davis Jr. has had several encounters with police but only one conviction, a criminal misdemeanor possession of marijuana charge filed in August 2008.
