INDIANAPOLIS — A potential Democratic candidate for Indianapolis mayor is dropping out of the race and endorsing former U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett for the office.

Washington Township Trustee Frank Short said Wednesday he would end the mayoral campaign he announced in February. The former three-term City-County Council member said he worried a divisive primary would hurt the changes of a Democrat being elected mayor next year.

Hogsett stepped down at the end of July as the top federal prosecutor in Indianapolis and has formed an exploratory committee for a mayoral run. State Rep. Ed DeLaney has announced he'll see the Democratic nomination.

Republican Mayor Greg Ballard hasn't yet said whether he will seek a third term next year.
