GARY, Indiana — A state Senate committee has approved a proposal urging the state Department of Transportation to change the name of a Gary street to honor late Mayor Rudy Clay.
The (Munster) Times reports (http://bit.ly/1h2zddc ) the proposal to rename Fifth Avenue still must clear some procedural hurdles, but is expected to be approved by the General Assembly. The street also is the Gary portion of U.S. Route 20.
Clay was appointed mayor in 2006 after the resignation of Scott King, and Clay was elected to a full term the following year. He abandoned his bid for a second-term after learning he had prostate cancer. He died last June at age 77.
Democratic State Sen. Earline Rogers of Gary is the proposal's sponsor. She says Clay loved serving the people of Gary.
