Two arrested on burglary, theft charges

Two men were arrested after a neighbor reported them trying to take a stove from an empty mobile home.

Michael Wellman, 23, Whiteland, and Charles Willis, 38, Greenwood, were arrested on charges of burglary, residential entry, attempted theft and criminal mischief.

A resident in the Southwood Estates mobile home community, near the intersection of Worthsville Road and U.S. 31, called police when she saw Wellman and Willis attempting to remove a stove from an empty mobile home at 9:30 p.m. Monday, according to a report from the Greenwood Police Department.

The resident saw Willis kick in the door to get inside, the report said.

Willis told police he was in the neighborhood earlier Monday afternoon and saw several men taking items out of the mobile home, and he asked if there were any items he could have to sell for recycling. He also told police that the stove was propping the door open when he returned, but the stove was dry despite steady rain outside, the report said.

Wellman, 3259 Bristlecone Court, is being held in the Johnson County jail on $15,000 bond. Willis, 2335 Harvest Moon Drive, is being held in the jail, but his bond was not available Tuesday afternoon.
