Franklin College women fall at DePauw

Junior Katie Brewer scored 18 points, grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds and blocked five shots, but the Franklin College women’s basketball team lost 71-51 at No. 9-ranked DePauw on Tuesday.

The loss was the Grizzlies’ first in three games this season.

DePauw (3-0) used an 18-1 run during a four-minute stretch in the second half to secure the victory. Senior forward Nichole Thompson made a pair of free throws to cut DePauw’s lead to 35-34 with 13:58 remaining. The hosts then used the big run to take a 53-35 advantage after a layup from Savannah Trees.

A jumper by sophomore guard Kayle Comer got the Grizzlies within 14 at 62-48 with 3:51 to play. That was as close as Franklin would get the rest of the way.

In the first half, the Grizzlies took a 13-8 lead after two free throws from Comer with 13:10 left in the period. DePauw answered with a 12-5 run during the next eight minutes to take a 20-18 edge at the 5:49 mark.

The Tigers took a 26-20 lead with 2:39 left in the first half. However, the Grizzlies’ defense held the Tigers scoreless the rest of the half. Freshman guard Madi Kolthoff drained a 3-point field goal to bring the visitors within three points.

Franklin trailed 26-23 at the break. Brewer collected 10 points and 11 rebounds during the opening 20 minutes of action. She finished the game 8-of-9 shooting, including making one 3-pointer.

Comer added nine points off the bench. Thompson chipped in seven points and grabbed six rebounds.
