Frances B. Swengel, 95, of Franklin, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015.

She was born on March 8, 1919 in Indianapolis to the late William and Jennie (Bishop) Snoddy.

Fran graduated from both Manual High School in 1935 and Indiana Central College in 1939. She was licensed to teach English, math, and physical education. Fran began her nearly 20 year teaching career in Ossian. 

After taking time away to raise her three children, she returned to teaching at Manual High School, Southport High School, and IPS #31, #13, and #85. She became a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a teacher’s honorary, in 1970.

Fran and Bob Swengel were married in 1941 at Pleasant Run United Church of Christ. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary prior to Bob’s death three years ago. After retiring, they lived on Raccoon Lake near Rockville and enjoyed all the activities of lake life. She and Bob enjoyed traveling in a motor home, especially through the West. After a period of time in Greenwood, she and Bob lived at the Masonic Home in Franklin, where they enjoyed walking on the campus and going to the Franklin girls’ basketball games. Fran’s favorite hobbies were knitting and reading.

Fran was very active in various churches in the communities where they lived. She had a special interest in music and enjoyed singing in and directing church choirs. She participated in Bible Study Fellowship for seven years. She was most recently a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Franklin.

Fran is survived by her children, Susan Morrison (Steve), John Swengel (Anne) and Kathy Carlson (Greg); five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Her husband, of 70 years, Bob Swengel; and lovely granddaughter, Julie Swengel, preceded her home.

Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:30 a.m.  Tuesday at G. H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home, 1605 South State Road 135 and Olive Branch Road.

Fran will be laid to rest in Washington Park East Cemetery in a private, family only, committal.
