Franklin women rout Anderson

Strong defense and balanced scoring powered the Franklin College women’s basketball team to a 68-26 win Saturday against visiting Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Anderson University.

The Grizzlies (7-5, 5-1 HCAC) were led by freshman Madi Kolthoff with a career-high 12 points off the bench. Sophomore Lauren DeSutter chipped in 10 points.

Franklin made a season-high nine 3-pointers in the victory.

The Grizzlies scored the first nine points of the game behind two three-point field goals by freshman Kelsey Smith. They took a 17-4 lead after a pair of free throws from DeSutter with 9:40 left in the first half.

Anderson got within eight points, 21-13, at the 6:42 mark, before the Grizzlies closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a 29-15 lead into halftime.

Franklin opened the second half on a 12-2 run to build a 42-17 lead after a three-pointer by Kolthoff. The Grizzlies held Anderson to 11 points in the second half.

Freshman Riley Achenbach scored nine points off the bench. Junior Katie Brewer and Kayle Comer each had eight points.

Franklin shot 40 percent from the floor and held Anderson to 25 percent shooting.

The Grizzlies’ next game is Wednesday at Rose-Hulman.
