Meijer Project Tracker

Estimated completion date: 2016

THE DETAILS

In October, Meijer announced plans to build a store at U.S. 31 and Commerce Drive in Franklin. The more than 200,000-square-foot store and gas station will be on property that is currently farmland. Meijer has one other location in Johnson County on State Road 135 and more than 200 stores in five states.

THE PROGRESS

Meijer initially submitted plans in the fall but then withdrew them in order to rework some of the details of annexation and rezoning plans that are needed on the nearly 23-acre site.

New plans were submitted in April to the city’s tech review committee to begin the rezoning and lengthier annexation process. Both requests will need to go before the city plan commission and city council and be approved before the company can start construction. The rezoning and annexation requests will go to the plan commission May 19, Franklin senior planner Joanna Myers said.

The city council must vote on the annexation multiple times, so the process likely won’t be finished until the end of June at the earliest.

After that, the city can review building plans and construction could start as soon as this fall. It likely will take several months to build the store, meaning shoppers will have to wait until next year for it to open.
