Chester L. ‘Check’ Burcham

Chester L. “Check” Burcham, 81, of Franklin, passed away Friday, Aug. 28, 2015, at Franciscan St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born Sept. 5, 1934, in Dunklin County, Missouri, to Elvis and LaVern (Wood) Burcham.

He married Paula (Wilson Handley) Burcham on May 24, 1959, in Franklin, she survives.

He retired in 2001 from the Fort Benjamin Harrison Finance Center after 14 years of service.

He and his wife Paula owned and operated Walters Truck Stop on U.S. 31 South in Franklin and later opened and operated Walters Marathon Truck Stop and Interstate 65 and Whiteland Road from 1973 to 1983.

He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. He enjoyed NASCAR, watching sports, especially and avid St. Louis Cardinals Fan, spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Paula, (Wilson Handley) Burcham of Franklin; a daughter, Terrina (Burcham) Stasik (James) of Greenwood; three grandchildren. Blake Stasik USN of Port Huenema, California, Morgan Stasik of Evansville, and Logan Stasik of Greenwood, and a brother, Don Burcham of Cardwell, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Nathan Burcham on Dec. 30, 1986, and a brother, Benson Burcham.

The Rev. Ray Wood will conduct a service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 S. Morton Street (U.S. 31 South) in Franklin. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m.Tuesday at the mortuary and from 10 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will take place in Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
