Lancers pitcher no-hits Cougars

Edinburgh pitcher Bailey Woodall fired a no-hitter to lead the host Lancers to 12-0 win against Greenwood Christian Academy in Tuesday night’s sectional semifinal.

Edinburgh, 11-10, now takes on Mid-Hoosier Conference rival Southwestern (Shelby) in tonight’s 6 p.m. championship game.

Lancers coach Stephen Clark said before the game that the team that shows up will likely win the game.

The Lancers have done more than show up, they have totally dominated play, first against Waldron on Monday and now Greenwood Christian.

Edinburgh pitchers have yet to yield a run, and that could continue against Southwestern, whom the Lancers no-hit earlier the season.

“That was during the middle of the season,” Clark said. “(The Lancers) are starting to play like winners, and once the girls grasp that, they will be dangerous.”

Woodall pretty much controlled the game for the Lancers. The left-handed junior struck out six Cougars and didn’t allow a hit out of the infield.

She gave up only two walks.

Woodall had quite a game at the plate, too, hitting a double and driving in three runs.

As a team, the Lancers had seven hits and six stolen bases.

Edinburgh scored three runs in the first inning, five in the second, three more in the third and once in the fourth inning.

In addition to Woodall’s double, junior shortstop Brianna Howard hit an inside-the-park home run to deep right and also tripled in the same area. She scored three runs and knocked in three runs. Catcher Kayla Beier also added two RBIs.

Despite the no-hitter, Clark said Woodall has pitched better this season.

Greenwood Christian, in its third season as a varsity program, finished the year at 7-7, and the Cougars take away a lot of experience and bring optimism for next season said coach Dan Carmichael.

“We’re you and resilient and play a tough schedule,” Carmichael said. “I’m very proud |of this team, and they didn’t give up all year and had fun.”
