Indiana State Police are investigating the death of Robert A. Quick, 44, after a pursuit with the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office on Monday night.

At 8:30 p.m., deputies began following a van that Quick was riding in, just south of Edinburgh, said Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, Indiana State Police spokesman.

The van suddenly came to a stop, and Quick got out and ran, Wheeles said.

Quick went into the Driftwood River and swam across. When he reached the other side of the river, Quick began having medical difficulties and collapsed, Wheeles said.

A deputy made it across the river and got to Quick, who was unresponsive, Wheeles said. The deputy immediately called for help and began giving medical care to Quick, he said. Bartholomew County Coroner Larry Fisher said the deputy had performed CPR on Quick at the scene.

Quick was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital where medical workers were not able to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at 9:22 p.m., Wheeles said.

Investigators later found out Quick was wanted on multiple warrants out of Johnson and Bartholomew counties.

An autopsy is scheduled for today at Columbus Regional Hospital.
