Restaurant investigated after video surfaces

A Franklin restaurant was inspected after an online video showed a worker killing bugs near food.

The video online showed a worker at Subway, located at 2120 E. King St., swatting bugs with an electronic handheld bug zapper near the counter with the food.

The phone at the restaurant was listed as disconnected on Tuesday, and the employees and managers could not be reached.

Johnson County Health Department workers saw the video, and had the restaurant inspected on Tuesday, health department director John Bonsett said.

The inspector told employees that was not a proper way to get rid of bugs near food, and suggested that measure could be taken if the food was put away, Bonsett said.

The inspection also noted that the restaurant had small flies, often known as fruit flies, and the health department worker talked with Subway staff about how to address the problem, Bonsett said.

No citations or fines were issued, and the restaurant was not ordered to be closed, Bonsett said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Bonsett said the restaurant was closed, which was likely a proactive measure to take care of the issue with bugs, he said.
