Three injured in crash east of Whiteland

Three people were injured and taken to the hospital after a crash east of Whiteland on Saturday night.

The crash happened just after 9 p.m. on County Road 250E, near County Road 600N.

The driver, Michael Markovich, 23, Whiteland, told sheriff’s deputies he got distracted and drove off the road, striking a tree, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office accident report.

No one in the car was wearing a seat belt and all three were thrown forward, the report said.

The front seat passenger, Sierra Whalen, 18, Greenwood, had a head wound and was unconscious when emergency workers arrived. She was flown to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital on a medical helicopter. She was listed in critical condition on Sunday afternoon.

The backseat passenger, Nathanael Markovich, 10, Whiteland, had a leg wound and was taken to Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health. He was listed in stable condition.

Michael Markovich complained of head pain and was taken to Methodist Hospital at IU Health. He was treated and released.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the accident.
