Arturo Lara Quintana

Arturo Lara Quintana, 79, died on Friday, Oct. 28, 2016.

He was born April 29, 1937, in Mexico City, Mexico.

His parents were Diego and Catalina Quintana.

Art’s parents and he and his siblings came to the United States in the late 1940s and settled in the Whiteland area in the early 1950s.

Art graduated from Whiteland High School in 1959 and was senior class president.

He became a U.S. citizen on April 13, 1960, and served in the U.S. Army for three years, receiving an honorable discharge in 1963.

He attended Vincennes University where he met his future wife, Gloria Wallace, in 1966.

He also attended Indiana University-Bloomington and graduated in 1970, majoring in environmental health sciences.

He and Gloria were married on June 6, 1970, in Vincennes. She survives.

Also surviving are their three daughters, Angela Quintana of West Hollywood, California, Ali Quintana of New Whiteland and Emily (Christopher) Abernathey of Greenwood; one granddaughter, Madison Sutherlin of Greenwood; sisters Rosa (Lupe) Mares of New Whiteland, Carmen Quintana and Henie Quintana of Whiteland, brothers, Carlos Quintana of Indianapolis, Fred Quintana of Needham and Armando (Phyllis) Quintana of Greenwood; sisters-in-law, Linda Quintana and Terry Quintana of Greenwood; nieces, Nichole (Mike) Quintana-Feigel and Stacy Quintana, nephews Jeff (Andrea) McClain, Charlie (Becky) Quintana and Tony Quintana; great-nieces Becca McClain, Mercedes Quintana, and Kennedy and Kyndal Quintana, and great-nephews Kody and Kolson Quintana, and Quinn and Parker McClain.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Josie (Charles) Pearce; and a niece, Michelle Quintana.

Art worked at the Marion County Health Department for 32 years, retiring in June of 2003. He also worked at FedEx for 12 years, retiring in October of 2007.

He had many interests, including reading, working on clocks and watches, doing yard work, traveling and playing games with his granddaughter, Maddie.

He was a softball coach for his daughters when they were in grade school and middle school.

He also volunteered with a local boy scout troop, helping with cooking at camporees.

For several years, he worked at the Our Lady of the Greenwood Church Festival, chairing the outside food grill and later helping at the grill for the pork chop dinners.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Simplicity Funeral Home, 7520 Madison Ave., Indianapolis, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic Church, 335 S. Meridian St., with visitation one hour prior to the Mass. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, 620 West Main St., Greenwood.
