Police looking for suspect in attempted theft

A suspected thief was struck in the head with a flashlight, and the air was let out of his tires when a resident found him inside a relative’s barn.

Police are looking for the man, who the resident believed was planning to steal items from his mother’s barn, according to the report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to a property in the 5100 block of County Road 325E, north of the Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area, just before midnight Saturday.

A resident told deputies he had been tipped off that someone was going to try to steal items from his mother’s barn, and he went to the property and found a door open and boxes stacked close to the door, the report said.

He confronted a man inside the barn, who started walking toward him. The resident believed the man might try to hit him, so the resident struck the man in the head with a flashlight twice, the report said.

The man was bleeding and left. The resident also found a car on the property, and found knives and a case that belonged to the resident inside the trunk of the vehicle, the report said. The resident let the air out of the tires, and had police tow the vehicle from his property, the report said.

Sheriff’s deputies looked for a man walking in the area, but did not find anyone.

The sheriff’s office is investigating.
