Nearly $2,000 lost in home rental scam

A second woman has lost money in a rental home scam.

The woman reported to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office that she responded to an online advertisement to rent a home on Runyon Road in the Center Grove area.

She met with a man and woman on Oct. 22 to sign a rental agreement and gave them $1,800 in cash for her deposit and first month’s rent, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report. The supposed owners agreed to send a handyman and painter to the home, but no one ever showed up, and the woman was unable to reach the couple, the report said.

On Sunday, the woman was at the home when another couple came over and asked what she was doing there, saying their children own the home. The woman contacted the owner, who said no one should be renting the home, the report said.

The couple the woman said she met with used the same names that were used during a similar scam reported to the sheriff’s office last week, the report said. Investigators have determined the names the couple gave were false.
