Graves overcomes incumbent for treasurer position

A Republican will take office as Johnson County treasurer next year.

Michele Ann Graves defeated a challenge from Libertarian Jessica Hoyt. Graves earned 79 percent of the vote, and Hoyt earned 21 percent.

Graves had defeated the incumbent and current treasurer, Diane Edwards, in the primary election, winning the Republican Party’s nomination.

Graves, a Morgantown area resident who helps run her family business, Wildlife Rescue and Control, will begin work as treasurer in January.

She will serve a four-year term in the office and be responsible for sending out property tax bills and collecting payments, and will earn a salary of $51,000.
