Teens admit guilt in thefts

Two teens arrested after a string of car break-ins last summer both pleaded guilty and were sentenced.

Trever Ellis, 19, Greenwood, and Stefan Macy, 19, Indianapolis, both pleaded guilty to one count of conversion and one count of unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, both misdemeanor charges.

The two teens were arrested in July 2015, after a string of vehicle break-ins was reported in a Center Grove area neighborhood.

Shortly after, surveillance video from a nearby grocery store showed the teens using a credit card stolen from one of the vehicles that had been broken into.

Police publicly released that footage, trying to find the men shown. Ellis and Macy both turned themselves in to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office shortly after.

Vehicle break-ins were common last summer, especially in Center Grove area neighborhoods. Break-ins were reported in Fair Oaks, Silver Springs, Willow Lake, Brentwood, Pebble Hills and Innisbrooke neighborhoods.

The night the credit card was used, a resident in the Pebble Hills neighborhood, near Fairview and Morgantown roads, heard her garage door open and spotted a man standing in front of her home. Police searched for the man but did not find him.

Shortly after, the stolen credit card was used and the men were shown on camera. At the time, investigators were looking into whether the men could be connected to other vehicle break-ins that were reported.

Ellis originally was charged with four other counts of conversion, but those were dismissed, according to court records.

He was sentenced to 220 days in jail, with 94 days credit, court records said.

Macy was sentenced to 30 days in jail, 150 days on probation and 24 hours of community service.

He also was ordered to take classes through a behavior-modification program, court records said.
