Rural Johnson County home damaged in fire

A rural Johnson County home was severely damaged in a fire Friday.

Firefighters from four departments spent more than three hours putting out a fire that began around noon in a home on Watson Road, east of Greenwood, Needham Fire Department Deputy Chief Tim Young said.

A delivery truck driver called in the fire. When firefighters arrived, heavy flames were coming from the front and side of the house, Young said.

Because there wasn’t a fire hydrant near the property, all of the water used to fight the blaze had to be trucked in, Young said. He estimated they used 20,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire.

Heavy winds of up to 20 mph made the task more difficult, as the fire would flare back up in spots where it had been previously put out, Young said.

A family dog had been inside the home. It’s not known if the animal escaped, he said.

Damage to the home is estimated at $130,000, Young said.

Investigators haven’t determined what caused the fire, he said.
