Woodmen host military day

Helping Hands For Freedom, founded in 2006 by Army Staff Sgt. Patrick Shannon, will be at Greenwood Community High School on Saturday evening for the boys basketball game between the Woodmen and Greenwood Christian.The organization’s aim is to raise funds for military families and honor veterans in local communities. Shannon, a two-time Purple Heart recipient and Bronze Star recipient, hails from Shelby County.

Helping Hands for Freedom aids the families of the fallen, wounded and deployed and helps provide immediate financial assistance until death benefits kick in. They also pay out to realize the dreams of surviving children (along the lines of Make-A-Wish) and provide mentorship opportunities.

The group also will make an appearance at Whiteland on Dec. 16 when the Warriors host a boys basketball game against Center Grove.

Greenwood player an All-Star

Parker Jones of Greenwood was selected to participate in the Junior All-American Games, which take place this weekend at the Baltimore Orioles’ spring training complex in Sarasota, Florida. The event features top baseball players from more than 20 states across several age groups.Phillips also plays for the Indiana Knights 14U team, coached by Roy Potter.

Franklin College athletes honored

Three members of the Franklin College women’s soccer team were named to the Academic All-America second team by the College Sports Information Directors Association.Senior back Audra Lane, junior midfielder Clare Lenart and sophomore forward Maddie Fleet all were chosen for the squad. All three were also on the All-HCAC first team after leading the Grizzlies to the regular-season conference championship.
