GREENWOOD
Verlis E. “Jim” Walker, age 69, passed away Thursday morning, Nov. 24, 2016, at Franciscan Health in Indianapolis after an extended illness. He was a resident of Greenwood.
Verlis was born Nov. 21, 1947, in Indianapolis to his parents, the late Verlis E. and Mary (Cochran) Walker.
He was a 1966 graduate of George Washington High School in Indianapolis and went on to attend IUPUI in Indianapolis.
Verlis married Linda (Walker) Walker on June 29, 1968, in Indianapolis. She lovingly survives after 48 devoted years of marriage.
Verlis also is survived by his children, Scott (Mary) Walker of Greenwood and Stephanie (Jeff) Routen of Ellettsville; sister, Eva (Rick) Spears of Indianapolis; mother-in-law, Beulah Walker of Greenwood; and grandchildren, Ashley and Aden Walker of Greenwood and Grant Routen of Bloomington.
He was preceded in death by his parents; special sister, Sharon Comer; and half-sisters, Dorothy Eppich and Irene Halterman.
Verlis retired in 2008 as an electrician for Allison’s Transmission in Speedway after 42 dedicated years of service. He was a member of the United Auto Worker Union Local 933 in Indianapolis.
After retirement, he spent time pursuing his two passions, time with his family and fixing just about anything you could put in front of him. Verlis was often referred to as “MacGyver” for being a jack-of-all trades.
He enjoyed traveling with his family and woodworking. Verlis was a fan of Indiana University men’s basketball, Indiana Pacers and the Indianapolis Colts. He was the most passionate about any activity his kids or grandchildren took part in. His children and grandchildren were his world!
The Revs. Jodi and Ed Charlton will conduct the funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St., Morgantown. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Unity Cemetery in Brown County.
