Whiteland schedules Christmas concert

Whiteland Community High School choir students can help get you in the holiday spirit.

Their concert “Joyful Sounds of the Season” will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 and 10 at the school, 300 E. Main St.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students.

Advanced choirs will perform holiday songs such as “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Jingle Bells.”

Two Center Grove students win award

Center Grove High School Red Alert Robotics Team 1741 members, juniors Jacob Lovrinic and Taylor Horne, won the Mobile App Challenge sponsored by and conducted at the IU School of Informatics and Computing at IUPUI.

Participants had to develop an original computer application for use on a mobile phone.

They both received scholarships and research awards that can be used at IUPUI.

Roncalli names students of month

Roncalli High School has named its October and November students of the month.

For November, they are:

Industrial technology, Noah Buening; religious studies, Abbey King; S.T.A.R.S. For October, they are:

Holiday 5K planned in Greenwood

Greenwood Christian Academy is hosting a 5K run.

The Rotary Club of Greenwood and Greenwood Christian Academy are organizing the race, which combines running and Christmas. The event begins at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 17.

Race registration starts in Greenwood Christian Academy auditorium, 835 W. Worthsville Road.

The first 300 adults and teens get a free five-piece Santa suit for the race.

An ugly sweater contest and best dressed pet contest will also be a part of the day.

Registration can be done at gcak12.org/ rotary-5k-event. The cost is $25 for an adult and $10 for a child.

Local FFA wins national award

Whiteland’s FFA has won a national award. The program was recognized in the 2016 National Chapter Award Program from the National FFA Organization.

The award highlights outstanding FFA chapters from throughout the country that successfully completed an annual set of required activities that encourage members to grow as individuals, work as a team and serve others in their communities.

Chapters that received star ratings in July judging were recognized in October.

$2,000 scholarships available to students

Johnson County REMC is offering two $2,000 scholarships to high school seniors planning to attend an Indiana college or university. To be eligible, a recipient’s parent or guardian must be REMC members. Applications are available from high school guidance counselors, at the REMC office at 750 International Drive in Franklin and on the utility’s website, jcremc.com.

Application deadline is Jan. 31.

Grad school grant offered by sorority

Graduate students who are studying guidance or counseling can apply for a grant. Nu Tau Chapter of Delta Theta Tau Sorority will award a $5,000 grant to graduate-level students. The winner will be chosen based on financial need and scholastic ability. Applications can found at deltathetatau.org. Click on the philanthropy tab.

The deadline is Dec. 10.

Scholarship available for aspiring teachers

Students who want to become teachers and stay in Indiana can apply for a scholarship. The Commission for Higher Education announced the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship Program, offering up to $7,500 each year of college for students who commit to teaching in Indiana for five years after earning their degrees. The scholarship is available to 200 students across the state who either graduate in the highest 20 percent of their class or earn a score in the top 20th percentile on the SAT or ACT. After college graduation, students must get a teaching license and teach in Indiana for five consecutive years.

Applications will be accepted through Dec. 31.

Students interested in applying need to be nominated by a teacher and submit the nomination form to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education.
